Sometimes, dogs need Xanax too

I am currently in the process of moving and the whole ordeal has been pretty rough on my dog Sampson.  The poor guy has developed anxiety and separation anxiety.  In an earlier blog post, I mentioned how he had been peeing on my bed.  Apparently that was an early form of his anxiety from moving!

Although he hasn't peed on the bed since then, he has been piddling a lot and also, while he normally loves riding in the car, he has been absolutely freaking out!  In fact, he has been just freaking out in general.  The other day, he was carrying his bone in his mouth and just walking in circles whining!  Finally I decided to call his vet and find out what I can do to make it easier on him.

What he suggested was basically a puppy form of Xanax- a sedative, anti-anxiety medication that will virtually knock him on his butt and make him "happy."  Sampson is only going to be taking this medication for ten days max because we want this to aid him, not have him rely on it.

Sampson relaxing after his puppy "Xanax."

Any pet owner who is experiencing problems with their dog ranging from motion sickness to G.I. problems, will find the website http://www.diamondpaws.com/health/drugs.htm useful.  This website lays out what over the counter, human medicines are or are not safe for dogs and their recommended dosages.  It is extremely useful and I urge you to check it out.

Saving the Day with Cheesecake

I know everyone gets into the Christmas, baking spirit around this time of year.  However, we often run into the problem of what to make!  Personally, my favorite thing to do after finals week is to go home and cook with my mom, it really helps de-stress me!

Today I am posting a recipe for Peppermint Bark Cheesecake.  Make this and you will be sure to impress anyone- and also de-stress yourself a little (-:

Crust:
2 – 3 cups finely ground chocolate graham crackers*
            6 – 8 tbsp. of butter
            1/3 cup of sugar
            1/8 tsp. salt
*Note: 2 cups is fine if you only want crust on the bottom, but no sides. Use 2 1/2 – 3 cups if you want sides.
Cheesecake:
5 (8 oz.) packages cream cheese, softened
            5 eggs
            2 egg yolks
            2 tsp. vanilla
            1 3/4 cups sugar
            1/8 cup flour
            1/4 cup heavy cream
            10 oz. white chocolate
1/4 – 1/2 tsp. (to taste) peppermint extract
            Red food coloring
Chocolate Ganache
            6 oz. bittersweet chocolate, chopped
            2 tbsp. powdered sugar, sifted
4 tbsp. cold (important!), unsalted butter, cut into small cubes
1/8 – 1/4 tsp. (to taste) peppermint extract
            Crushed peppermints
Process
.              Get out your cream cheese, eggs and cream and let sit while making the crust so that they are at or close to room temp by the time you need them.
.              Grind up crackers in a blender or food processor if necessary. Mix crumbs, sugar, salt and butter in a bowl until combined and press into the bottom and if you want, about an inch or two up the sides of a 10″ spring form pan. Place in a preheated 350 degree (F) oven and bake for 10 minutes. Take out to cool. Turn off the oven.
.              In a large bowl, combine cream cheese, eggs, egg yolks and vanilla; mix until smooth.
.              Add in the sugar, flour and heavy cream and blend until smooth. Do not over-mix as this will create more air bubbles which can contribute to your cake cracking.
.              Melt white chocolate on the stove over low heat or in the microwave. Mix into cheesecake batter.
.              Transfer 1/3 cheesecake batter into another bowl. Stir in peppermint extract and a few drops of food coloring.
.              Pour 1/3 of the original batter into the prepared crust. Drop in spoonfuls of the peppermint mixture on top. Pour in the rest of the original batter over that. Finally, drop in spoonfuls of the rest of peppermint mixture and swirl it all around with a knife, but don’t over mix.
.               Place in the oven and then turn it on to 400 degrees (F). Bake for 10 minutes. Turn the oven down to 200 degrees (F).Full size: Bake for 3 hours. Then turn the oven off, prop open the door slightly and let cool for 1 hour. Finally, place in your refrigerator and chill for a full 24 hours.
Small size: Bake for 2 hours. Then turn the over off, prop open the door slightly and let cool for 1 hour. Finally, place in your refrigerator and chill 12-24 hours. Remove spring form pan.
.               To make topping, melt chocolate on the stove over low heat or in the microwave. Remove from heat and let stand for 3 minutes.
.              Using a small whisk, stir in powdered sugar, followed by the pieces of butter. Stir in peppermint extract. If the mixture is too thin to spread, place the bowl over ice water and stir for a few seconds or until it thickens.
Quickly spread a thin layer of chocolate on top of the cheesecake (if it gets too firm, put it back on the stove over low heat for a minute or so). Sprinkle with crushed peppermints and gently press them into the chocolate. Let set at room temperature for at least 10 minutes before serving.

"I speak for the trees, for the trees have no tongues"

As a nanny, one of the problems I run into is finding a family friendly movie with a positive message.  Today, so many movies lack the same principals and quality of those from when I was growing up such as The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast or Snow White.  I feel that even though movies are dubbed "children's movies" there are so many that basically rot their brain.

I like to show movies to the kids I nanny for that teach them something and leave them excited about what they just watched.  One movie in particular I recommend for ANY age group is the movie The Lorax.

Based off of Dr.Seuss's book, the movie teaches children about air quality, ecological protection and awareness and greed.  Through multiple songs in the movie, children are left singing about these issues and are excited to practice the main theme of the movie: protect and growth of trees.

The character the Lorax, is known for saying, "I speak for the trees, for the trees have no tongues."  Through the movie, the children learn about why we need tress as well as letting them grow.  The kids I nanny for love the song, "Let it Grow," which promotes tree growth.

All in all, if you are looking for a good, family friendly, educational, fun movie for anyone under the age of 12, watch The Lorax.

College is a Lasting Decision

Over the next two days, I will be uploading a two part podcast series called College is a Lasting Decision.  Tomorrow I will be discussing choosing the right college and the next day I will be discussing why Washburn University, the college I currently attend, is a great college choice!

The point of this podcast is to inform prospective college students about not only how to pick a college, but what a good college can offer you.  Every college student goes through these battles and at some point in time, have to choose a college.

Enjoy!

Summer in the Mountains

One of the things college students struggle with most is money.  Sometimes, students have a hard time finding a job for the school year and then again for the summer.  Today, I would like to give you, my readers, an option.  Why not spend a summer as a camp counselor?

That is the very question I asked myself last year when I considered applying to be a camp counselor.  I decided that while I would be receiving pay, I also would be receiving food and a place to stay at no cost to me.  With that in mind, I set out to find a camp that was very different and very far away from Kansas.

I found my home this past summer at the Green River Preserve Summer Camp in Cedar Mountain, North Carolina.  I left at the end of May and did not return home until mid August.  While there, I was exposed to a new climate, animals, plants and experiences.  In a single session, the kids will be taught multiple different activities, partake in daily mentor hikes, learn simple farming, go on a two day pack-out/hike-out camp-out and most of all, learn to find themselves and "Be the best me at GRP!"

The camp itself is an educational nature camp that is located on over 6,000 acres in the middle of the Appalachian Mountains.  The owners, "Mama" Missy and Sandy are two of the sweetest people you will ever meet.  Missy runs the camp, and Sandy enjoys the camp, mainly teaching fly fishing and tying.

I urge everyone, at some point in their college career, to spend a summer giving to others and becoming a camp counselor.  The personal rewards and experiences are unlike any you will ever receive.

I spent my summer as not only a counselor but also the lead photographer of the GRP's media team.  Below I have created a slideshow of my photographs from this past summer.  (To see photo captions, click full screen then click show info in the upper right.)

Hollywood? No, Nannywood

For about the past year, I have been working for a nanny service here in Topeka.  I not only permanently nanny for a family, but I also weekend babysit.  The last family I babysat for was, well, not your everyday, Kansas family- they belonged in Beverly Hills.

Have you ever seen the TV series on abc family called Beverly Hills Nannies?  Watch the video below to get a sense of what I will be talking about:

Ok, maybe they weren't THAT bad, but it was definitely an experience I won't soon forget.  The house alone was GORGEOUS!  The family had two sons, 9 and 7, and one daughter, 3.  The two sons automatically liked me because I told them I knew how to play the video game Halo.  They wanted me to go play with them right away, but of course, I had to get the run-down on everything from the parents.

The parents were, well, interesting.  They run a jewelry store so the wife's wedding ring was HUGE.  Honestly, I don't know how she can go swimming with such a rock on her finger!  Aside from that, the husband told me to help myself to their liquor and beer.  WHAT!?  First of all, I am not 21, second I would NEVER drink while watching someone's kids.

The rest of the night was filled with a very spoiled three-year-old crying and a tour of their home gym.  On the walls, the wife had cut out different body shots of toned women in magazines and labeled each one either upper body, abs or legs.  It was clear from first meeting the parents that they were obsessed with their looks.

Before leaving, the parents instructed me that the kids were kept on a very strict diet during the week, but on weekends, they were allowed what ever, when ever they wanted.  Not kidding you, the boys had cupcakes and cheeze-itz for dinner.  By this point I felt completely out of my element.

When the parents came home, the husband explained to me how disappointed he was that he wasn't "smashed."  (Apparently his drinking buddies stayed home.)

While this family was none like I had ever met before, I definitely would babysit for them again.

Bruised From Black Friday

Photo Curtosy of: http://www.timeanddate.com/holidays/us/black-friday
I went Black Friday shopping for the first time this year.  My boyfriend's family and I left around 11:30p.m. on Thanksgiving and did not return home until after 9a.m. the next morning.  We made a list of all the places we wanted to go, their opening times and the order we would go to each place.

All in all, it was a successful trip.  We went to the mall first and the theme was, "Do you REALLY need it?  No?  Ok, let's go."  The lines were extremely long and we decided to not wait in them.

I made it through the entire night without a single cut, scrape or bruise.  Honestly, the crowds didn't seem too "rowdy."  I began thinking that all the hype about Black Friday was a little over-exaggerated.

Later in the afternoon on Friday, my boyfriend and I went back to Walmart to pick up a gun safe and a printer.  While in the process of loading the safe, my boyfriend went to move the printer and, in the process, knocked me in the head with it.  I can't say the bruise was anything too exciting, but none the less, it was still a bruise from Black Friday.  In my mind, the day was a success.

I thought only toddlers peed the bed!

My dog, Sampson, is traditionally a very well-behaved dog.  Every now and then he does something and I think, "what the heck are you doing!?"

Well twice now, I have had a major, "what the heck are you doing," thought go through my mind.  On two different occasions within the past two weeks, Sampson has peed...on my BED!

Being fully housebroken, and knowing that dogs do not pee where they sleep, I was extremely confused.  On one occasion,  Sampson's sister did the same thing only in her sleep.  At first I thought that maybe Sampson had done the same, but after the second time, I knew it was something else.

I decided to turn towards Google to see what I could find out.  This is the article I read: Ask a Dog Trainer.  Basically, the article said that dogs, especially young, non-dominant dogs, have a tendency to relieve themselves on their owner's bed after being reprimanded or left alone.  The article said that they do this because they feel insecure or vulnerable so for what ever reason, they pee where their owner's scent is the strongest- our bed.

The article explains that often dogs will grow out of this or to try buying them a crate.  Sampson already has a crate, so I think I may try leaving him in that more often.

Don't worry, I washed all my bedding!

Moving, Cleaning, YUCK!

http://www.thatswhatsheread.net/2012/06/fabulous-friday-june-15th.html
Well I am about to move from an apartment town home into a duplex house!  Yay!

The pros?
1. A big yard for Sampson (my dog)
2. More privacy
3. A quiet atmosphere
4. Closer to my job
5. Closer to the dog park
6. More space
Etc., the list goes on.

So...the cons?
1. MOVING
2. CLEANING

Moving is always work, but the cleaning is a lot of work as well!  I have turned into a neat freak like my mom so clean for me has a different meaning.  On top of cleaning both my current apartment and the new house, I am going to be doing some minor repairs and painting at both places.  Thankfully I will have all Winter break to do this so its not like I have classes to contend with.  I have been doing a lot of research on home decorating and here are a few websites that I found:

Why can't there be 100 hours in a day?

Recently I have had a lot of trouble with time management.  I feel that I time manage fairly well, however sometimes I have too many "important" things to do in one day and I find out that I have no idea how to do it all in 24 hours!  Between doing homework, cleaning, taking care of my dog, studying for classes and work, I have found myself struggling to complete everything with 110% effort.

You know how back in high school health class, the teacher strongly pushed getting at least eight hours of sleep every night?  Well I have found that my habits of going to bed by 10:30/11:00p.m. every weekday has, in effect, made getting everything done harder.  By going to bed at a decent hour, my body has gotten use to it, and now, anytime I try to stay up later to study, I find it next to impossible because my body and brain shut off and tell me, "it's time for bed."

I have thought up multiple solutions to this problem:
           * Go to bed later every night by one hour
           * Wake up earlier every morning to start sooner on my "To Do List"
           * Throw so much caffeine in my system that I can't sleep

The last solution is something I only do during finals week, so don't worry, I am not a caffeine addict!

In the long run, I feel that going to bed a bit later is going to be the easiest thing to do. Telling myself, "oh, I will just get up early and do it in the morning," rarely works for college students.  When you wake up, tired and wanting to stay in bed, seeing that you have a few hours extra that you COULD sleep often is too much of a temptation.  I think that for the remaining weeks of the semester, I will prioritize what is due, and change my average "bed time" to 11:30p.m./12:00a.m.

Yellow Heels

Have you ever had something you really loved but then something happened to ruin it?  Well, that happened to me this week!

Yesterday, one of my roommates let the puppies run around in my room without supervision and know what happened?  One of them chewed up my favorite pair of yellow heels!  Eek!  Not only were they my favorite pair, they were expensive too.  Well, needless to say, they are damaged beyond repair.

Moral of the story?  If you are either planning on getting a puppy or currently have one, make sure anything that could be damaged is placed far...FAR out of reach!

Sociology=Pulling My Hair Out

All semester, I have been taking Into to Sociology as an online course.  Should be relatively easy right?  Wrong.  A course is only as good as the teacher, and in my case, my teacher is not making this class any easier.

Since early in the semester, my professor has been changing due dates drastically and removing assignments to the point I am completely confused on what is due when!  Beyond that, she will go 2-3 WEEKS without assigning anything, then out of the blue, assign us 200+ pages of reading along with 50+ questions over the assigned reading due that week!  To top it off, the material is so in-depth, you actually have to read the material, no "skimming."

As a student taking 17 credit hours, I do not have the time to to just not doing anything for a class for weeks, then try and find time to do the amount of work required from my professor.

To top that off, my professor does not reply to emails.  Last Wednesday I sent her 2 emails, then another on Thursday.  Friday she sent us an email assigning a paper that was worth 20% of our grade.  On the rubric for the paper, she instructed that we could find the due date on our class syllabus.  Big surprise, it was not on there.  So, I gave her a few days to reply to my previous 3 emails, then Monday I sent her another email asking if she had received my last few emails along with the due date of the paper.  She FINALLY emailed me back yesterday saying that she would reply back to my previous emails within the HOUR.  Another big surprise, she has yet to email me about my past 3 emails, but also, in the one email she did reply to, she never answered my question about the paper.

Oh boy!  By this point, which is where I am at now, I am completely frustrated!  I know every college student has experienced this at least once, but it really stinks to feel like your professor does not care if you pass or fail a class.  Especially being an online class, I do not understand how a professor will just ignore her only means of communication with her class.

Ugh, I don't know what to do!

Bees Suck!

Well, I made a post about MY puppy, now it is time to make a post about my roommate's dog (my puppy's brother.)

As you can tell by the photo, Maximus just doesn't look right- his face is HUGE!  Well let me tell you, it is quite the story.

Last night, Korissa, my roommate and Maximus' owner, was going to stay the night at our sorority, so I told her I would watch Max for the night.  At about 11p.m., I decided to go to bed, so like normal, I let both puppies outside to do their business, then brought them both to my room with me.  Sampson (my puppy) always sleeps with me, and on the nights I watch Max, he too joins us in bed.

Well last night I just couldn't understand it!  Max just wouldn't stay in bed.  Finally after the third time of him jumping out of bed, I decided to put him in his kennel for the night as "punishment."

Only a few minutes after putting him in his kennel, I heard a horrible retching noise!  Seeing as my other roommate was watching a horror movie in the same room, I asked her what that noise was.  Her response was that she thought it was Max.  I quickly jumped out of bed and found Max, vomiting white foam in his kennel.  After watching him vomit 3 times i tried getting him upstairs and outside.  There, he continued to vomit the white foam and appeared to be "foaming at the mouth."

Knowing he was up-to-date on all his shots (including his rabies) I was terrified that he had found something that had poisoned him.  Thankfully Korissa was still at the house, so I quickly ran upstairs to her room and told her that Max was extremely sick.  Thinking I was overreacting, she came downstairs and saw what I was talking about.  Only in the minutes it took me to get Korissa and for us to come downstairs, the whole left side of his face had swelled up five times the normal size and was hard as a rock!

Immediately Korissa knew he was having an allergic reaction to something and began getting his things together to go to the emergency vet clinic on Gage.  While she gathered his things, I took his collar off in case his throat and neck started swelling as well.  Once in the car, I called the vet to let them know we were coming and poor Max's face had now started swelling on the right side and around his eyes.

I would be lying if I told you I wasn't slightly panicking by this point.

The vet, once seeing Max, laughed and knew he must have been stung by a bee or wasp.  Apparently some dogs are as allergic to them as humans are!  She injected him with some steroids and instructed us to give him Bennadryl for the next few days.  Right before leaving, our roommate that stayed at home called me a told me that she had found a honey bee on the back porch.  It apparently had no stinger and was dying.

Yup, Max is deathly allergic to bees!  The picture above was taken less than 30 minutes after he was stung.  The vet said that if he had been stung and we had left not knowing that he had been stung, that his face probably would have swelled up to the point it killed him!

Talk about a scary night!

This morning his face was completely swelled down and he was acting like his normal self.  Now we just have to spray the yard for stinging insects!

Teachers Talk...I'm Convinced

Have you ever been sitting in class, staring at your agenda wondering why you have so many tests in one week?  Well, I'm convinced that teachers talk and decide to all give out their first test on the first week.

I don't really think like this, but sometimes (like this week for me) it seems like it.  This week alone I had 5 tests!  Talk about studying.  I also had multiple assignments, projects and study guides do along with each test.  Basically, again, I was stressed.  I decided that I needed to time manage this week like crazy!

What I did, was ranked what I needed to do from most to least important.  I really tried to stay focused and keep myself away from facebook and other social media.  I found this video and I really feel like it has some good advice for stressed college students!  Enjoy

Vampires Aren't The Only Ones That Don't Like Garlic

This is my four-month-old puppy Sampson!  Sam is 3/4 Boxer, 1/4 Basset Hound and is the love of my life.  He goes pretty much does everything with me- go to the store, go to work, sleep in bed with me, ect.  Well, as I mentioned in a previous post, I nanny for a family with three girls.  The family absolutely loves Sam and basically REQUIRES him to come with me with I nanny.

That being said, yesterday Sam came with me to their house and we were there from 1p.m. to 7p.m.  John, the father, came home briefly to help me prepare dinner for the girls.  It was something simple, but healthy: grilled chicken, broccoli and carrots.

Being the age they are, the girls had food left over on their plates (obviously their eyes were bigger than their stomachs.)  Normally, I try to stay away from giving Sam human food, but every now and then, I cave.  With a few pieces of chicken, a piece of broccoli and a carrot left on the girls' plates, I generously gave them to Sam.  He DEVOURED them all and was one happy puppy.

About an hour later, I left and Sam took his normal position in the front, passenger seat.  About 15 minutes from home, he started shaking and breathing uncharacteristically.  I called my boyfriend in a panic begging him to google if carrots or broccoli were poisonous for dogs.  Telling me to chill out, he did what I asked and found that neither were, but that onions and garlic could be lethal!  Immediately I began panicking even more because I realized that the broccoli was seasoned with garlic powder!  Reading more, my boyfriend found out that garlic powder wasn't necessarily harmful for dogs, but it just gave them bad gas (he then suggested for me to NOT sleep with Sam that night.)

Minutes later, Sam was completely normal again and by 9p.m., I had put the "almost accident" behind me.  As I laid down for bed a few hours later, Sam got in his normal position- butt in my face, sprawled out over 90% of my bed.  Just as I began drifting off, a HORRENDOUS smell wafted my way.  Needless to say, Sam's garlic was fighting back and I felt as if I needed a gas mask to sleep.

So what did I learn?

Stressed To The Max

Well this week has been such a hectic week for me!  Washburn's Sorority Recruitment is this week so I have been extremely busy working with my sorority.  Call time is 4:30p.m. all week and on average we aren't finished until after 11:00p.m.

On Tuesday/Thursdays I have class from 11:00-12:15p.m. then I have to be at work by 1:00p.m.  I am working this week until 4:00p.m. and have 30 minutes to drive home, change into my recruitment clothes and be at campus!  On Monday/Wednesdays I have class from 11:00-5:15p.m. and have a matter of minutes to get to my sorority house and change clothes.

So, you may ask, when do I have time for ANYTHING else?  Well, I really don't!  Homework and school has become a secondary thought when it should be my primary.  I am really struggling this week juggling everything.  My house is a complete mess, I feel like I have been neglecting my dog and my school work (well it definately has not been up to parr.)

I think I am going to go crazy!

Finals Week Topped Off With Red Duct Tape

Most of my blog entries will be current happenings, but this was just too good not to blog about.

This past spring I, like everyone else on campus, was extremely stressed with finals.  Something I DIDN'T expect to have to stress about was...my car.  Mid finals week, I head to my car to leave for work.  Seeing as I lived in the Alpha Phi house, I had the advantage of parking in a separate lot from other Washburn students.

As I walk to my car I notice something VERY wrong.  Someone, had noticeably kicked the drivers mirror right off my car!  The perpetrator used such force that the three screws securing the mirror to my car were split in half- half the screw was in my mirror, the other half still in my car.  I can not even describe what was going through my head at the time except complete disbelief.  Someone went out of their way to walk into our house's parking lot and do this!  Of course, the closest security camera was yards away and unusable.

So what did I do?  I made the 10 minute drive to Walmart (without the use of my mirror) and purchased red duct tape.  You know you have a trashy car when you have to keep duct tape in your glove compartment just to keep your car from falling apart!

About My Blog

Hi all!  My name is Cate and this is my blog.  My is called 365 Days of Problems #I'mACollegeStudent.  I decided to use this topic for multiple reasons, but perhaps the biggest one being that is is extremely relevant to anyone reading my blog.

Being a full-time college student, belonging to a sorority, having a job, living with 4 other people (one is gay, one is a Turkish exchange student and two are my sorority sisters) and also living with three puppies, life can be pretty hectic at times!  Every day creates challenges I must solve- some more sever than others.  I created this blog for the main purpose of entertainment.

Enjoy!
